The nonprofit New England Apple Association educates consumers about New England apples through its website, www.newenglandapples.org, and promotions throughout the year.
About 40 varieties are grown commercially in New England, but many more heirloom and new varieties are available at individual orchards. McIntosh apples make up about two-thirds of the New England crop. Other leading varieties include Cortland, Empire, Macoun, Honeycrisp and Eastern Red Delicious.
The average annual New England fresh apple crop is about four million 42-pound boxes.
Russell Steven Powell is the author of two books about apples, Apples of New England (Countryman Press, 2014), and America’s Apple (Brook Hollow Press, 2012). He was the association’s executive director from 1998 to 2011 before stepping down to become its senior writer. Contributor Bar Lois Weeks is the association’s current executive director.

Any hope of getting the First Place Winner’s recipe for the “Apple and Other” category at the Wachusett Applefest 2014?
We don’t have it at–the recipe may have been misplaced or else the winner left without leaving it. If he comes forward, we will post! Thanks for inquiring.
Please check out Parkerlectures.com
I think your topic would be a good fit for our program

Good morning Paul, Thanks for writing! I am interested in speaking with you, and called just now, but there appeared to be something wrong with your or my phone. You can call me at 413-247-3232, or email russpowell@verizon.net. I have made many presentations in a variety of venues–I am reading at Porter Square Books in Cambridge tonight at 7–and as you suggest it looks as if the Parker Lectures might be a good match. I look forward to hearing from you. Best regards, Russell Steven Powell
Anybody know of an orchard or retailer selling Baldwin-based sweet cider? Please email me at: rgray@pozenrsearch.com – Thanks
Not offhand … but if you search for Baldwin on our website (start with the “Apples” link on the home page), you will see a list of orchards that grow Baldwin. You might contact them to see if any of them press cider using just Baldwin. Good luck! Great apple!!
Do you ship apples to Hawaii?
Good morning! A number of our orchards ship apples. Visit the Orchard Finder on our home page and you will have access to descriptions and links to websites of more than 80 of our orchards. That should enable you to find which ones ship. Good luck! Are you looking for certain varieties?
Thank you , Yes I’m looking for reinnettes and Calville.
